Targeted Treatment for Sunspots and Skin Cancers

At Palmyra Skin Clinic, we utilise Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a cutting-edge, non-surgical solution to effectively treat actinic keratoses (sunspots) and certain superficial skin cancers. With minimal scarring and very short downtime, this innovative treatment combines the application of Metvix cream with controlled red light activation, selectively targeting abnormal cells for effective and precise results.


Gentle Application, Powerful Results

The PDT process begins with the application of Metvix (Methyl aminolevulinate – MAL) cream to the targeted lesions by our doctors. Following a 3-hour absorption period, our Healite II machine activates the cream with red light for approximately 15 minutes. This cellular-level reaction effectively & selectively destroys pre-cancerous or cancerous cells while preserving the integrity of surrounding normal skin cells. For your comfort and peace of mind this process is always done under direct supervision by our trained nurse.

Minimal Downtime, Maximum Results

During the light activation phase, Photodynamic Therapy may cause expected side effects, such as a burning, stinging, warm sensations – the severity of which varies from person to person. Post-treatment, common side effects include redness, swelling, blistering, weeping, and scabbing, typically improving quickly after 3-4 days. Direct sun exposure to the treated area should be avoided for at least 72 hours, though ideally for a week. There is the option of accelerating recovery through our yellow light healing therapy sessions. Generally, you can expect that the treated skin to have most healed by day 7-10.
